Eyedrop is a work in progress for Drupal. This example uses Image, Image attach, Eyedrop, and Eyefield in combination to allow the administrator to create image derivatives based on what looks best on the page.
Basically, you don't want to destroy your images when you crop them. You want a big master image, and context specific derivatives which are created from the master image.
There is no new technology here, especially the individual components, but it does prove tricky to get the Javascript cropper, server callback, server image manipulation, and so on, all in the one place.
